Assignment 3 - Evaluation

How the aims of the production have been met:

Our aim was to create an interesting horror film trailer which was suitable for both genders (for 15-year-olds and over). We made this possible by having teenagers as our actors which would make it more interesting since people can feel like they are friends with the characters because of there age.

We created a schedule for us to follow to meet our deadline. The schedule contained the shots we had to film for each day, the actors we needed and all the props that we had to have with us on that day; this helped us stay on task and made the actors aware of the days that they had to be free on so we could deliver our final product on time.

I was responsible for our cameras and lighting with the budget I had I decided to purchase a continuous light which helped us film at night because we needed to film in the dark since it is one of the conventions of our genre. We were using Final Cut Pro to edit our trailer; we choose to use it because we had to colour grade some of our shots which had blood in them to make it look realistic. We used a whiteout transition to show the death of Alice. We also added some sound effects like screaming and gunshots to signify the death of Alice.

How the product applies appropriate codes and conventions and uses appropriate media language:

Our trailer follows the traditional conventions of a horror film; we added creepy music, quick shots and death which would attract our audience. We also chose to have our film based on an abandoned house which is also one of the conventions of a horror film.

How the product represents people, places or events:

Our trailer represents people using common gender stereotypes, one of them being that women are weak and can not fend for themselves; our trailer has two confidence male characters who are being followed by a weak girl (their friend). The chain of events that happen also follows the genres traditional chain of events; first three friends find an abandoned house and start to explore it. While exploring a disruption of normality happens when they hear some noises coming out of a room, they go and try to look for the source of that noise, then they get haunted by the ghost etc. The costumes that were used in our trailer for the three friends were casual 21st-century teenage clothes; we used them to make the characters more appealing to our audience. For the ghost, we used a plain white dress that had dirt and blood on it to show that she was not normal.

Where and when the product would be exhibited/distributed:

Our trailer will be distributed six months before the release of our film so it could reach a large number of audience to increase the number of potential viewers. We will be distributing our trailer on social media outlets like youtube and Instagram since our target audience uses these social media outlets regularly. We will also distribute our trailer to cinemas to be viewed before all horror films since the people watching those movies love the genre they are most likely going to come back to watch our film.

What regulations and controls might be applied to the product and how these have been taken into consideration:

The BBFC laws do not affect our trailer as much since our film only contains horror and violence (which are affected by BBFC laws), therefore our movie would be rated as a PG15 rated film.

Assignment 3 - Proposal

Audience research conclusions

In conclusion of our research, we decided using the information to make our trailer more appealing to the audience which will increase the chances of them watching the film. We were influenced by the results to use an abandoned house and to have ghosts as our antagonist to create our trailer. We also decided to put captions in our trailer since people voted for it.

Genre

The genre that we choose was horror because we found out that it was the most voted for in our questionnaire. We will use the typical horror film conventions like creepy music, paranormal activity and quick cuts. We will also add in some scary shots to get the viewers to feel like they are part of the film/trailer which will make them want to watch the rest of the film.

Content/Structure

Our film will be named The Recurring, we chose this name for our film because the same events occur to everyone who enters the house that is haunted by Alice. We won't be revealing much information in our trailer to get the audience interested in what the fate of the three friends would be. The structure of our trailer will be mostly different jump scares from different parts of the film in a random order so the audience won't know the order of chain of events, which will get them interested in watching the film when released.

Audience

We believe that the most appropriate age for our genre are 15-year-olds and over, due to the graphic scenes we have in our film. Due to the different interests of people, our film is targeted to people from both genders who love watching frightening and graphic scenes. The trailer that we will create will appeal to our target audience because we will including some frightening and graphic scenes that will grab the attention of the audience.

Representation

To make it more appealing to the audience we will be representing the characters as normal people so the audience would feel a connection towards them as if they knew each other, thus we will be using some gender stereotypes to make the audience feel sympathetic to the female characters like when Alice would be kidnapped and murdered; usually woman or in this case a young girl would be kidnapped which shows that she is a weak person who can not defend her self without the help of others. We will be using most of this genre's typical representation like quick cuts, jump scares and the use of blood.

Institution

Our trailer will be distributed on social media outlets and it will be shown as an upcoming film on cinema screens before films of the same category, due to the fact that people are interested in this particular genre; effectively increase the chances of getting a greater amount of audience to watch the film. We will also be releasing a film poster so we would be able to advertise our film on traditional outlets like magazines, newspapers and billboards.
