Assignment 2 - Analysis

Alessia cara is a pop-music singer that recently started her music career. She works with a company called Def Jam Recordings. The company mainly uses social media to market the artist songs and albums. Know-It-All is an album by Alessia Cara, it contains ten songs and one of the songs is Scars to Your Beautiful; the song is mainly about how people should be treated and that people should not be judged on their appearance. The song is aimed to all teenagers from both genders mostly because they get judged on their appearance in school a lot.

Music video analysis

In the beginning of the video the only thing we can see was an extreme close up on to the artists face which showed the facial expression of the artist which suggest that she looks innocent, suddenly it changed into a long shot which reveals that she is in an empty room with two large windows behind her, it suggests that she should not be defined by what she owns and have. The lighting was mostly coming from the sun which made the video look a bit unclear and it gives the effect that the artist was nervous, it suggest that even though you are nervous you can still do what you want to do.The costume that the artist is wearing is  normal every day clothing, which shows and suggests that the main focus of this music video is the people that are being judged on how they look and not how they act which makes it unfair to them. It also suggests that she is like one of the audience, making them feel more comfortable and connected to the artist.

The artist Alessia Cara is represented as being a rebel, because in the music video she is singing about how people should be treated, which would lead to people starting to believe in themselves and for them to feel comfortable to do what they want to do freely. This shows that the genre of this music video is R&B. R&B is a genre the is contributed towards a certain group of people, which in this case is people that are ashamed of who they are.

The camera tends to move a lot, which makes the audience feel that they are moving and living the moment with the artist. From the editing perspective the scenes tend to move from one to another really fast to show the beat of the song, this is called fast cutting.

The colour of the background is a really light blue colour which matches with the album cover, it also shows that it is a nice day with an amazing weather which makes the audience feel happy and also gives more meaning to the song, because it is all about people should be less judgmental and more loving and caring.

Finally, the music video's message is to be loving, caring and happy which is a positive message to give teenage kids which will also make them have a lot of hope in there life. Even though the music song is not the typical pop-music song it still has a huge impact on our society.

CD Cover analysis

Alessia Cara's Know-It-All CD cover has the artist long shot photo on the cover which shows her full body posture in the photo unlike other musicians who would only have an extreme close up on there face for example Adele 21. The lighting of the photo is so bright which gives the impression of hope and happens which links the album to the song Scars to Your Beautiful. The covers background is a shade of light blue which also links back to the song with the impression of hope and happiness.

The shot shows a lot of details about the artist, and her posture shows her confidence and her positive effect to the audience. It also suggest that she can do what ever she likes to, which makes the audience want to be like her confident and a risk taker. A lot of teenagers would want to be like her since she is young and successful in life, she could be their role model because she inspired a lot of people to fight the odds.

The cover does not contain any type of prop and looks empty which show that you don't need anything to make you feel happy except for your self and it also suggest that nothing defines a person except for his actions. The artist is represented as a normal young woman that is up to date with the fashion trend. The artist is wearing a normal top that a lot of young women would wear and jeans with the ripped part that a lot of women wear in modern society. The artist is not wearing a lot of makeup on her face like what most artists would do for an album cover, instead she is wearing the casual makeup that most woman would wear to work.

This album cover still has the main three things needed to make an album cover it has the artist name Alessia Cara, the album name Know-It-All and features an image of the artist. I feel that it follows the typical album conventions because this is one of the first albums she made, and she still is a new artist so she has to have all of that on her album cover to show people who she is.

Conclusion

Finally, what mostly links both the music video and the album cover is the colour of the background of the artist it is both light blue, which makes it the main theme of the album. The style of the artist hair is the same in both music video and the album cover which also links both together, There are no props used in  the music video and the album cover which suggest that the main focus is the artist words, which makes the audience think about the artist's words in the song. Both album cover and music video makes the audience feel connected towards the artist due to her not using a lot of make up or wear expensive clothing which suggests that she wants people to know that they are equal and that there should not be differences on how  people should be treated who ever they may be.

Assignment 1 - Analysis

This advert is for a boss hugo fragrance called The Scent, which focuses on the man in the photo because the fragrance is for male users. It promises that if you wear this fragrance you can have an amazing and wealthy life and you will be loved by most women.

The narrative is based on the stereotype that men are stronger than women, because the female model gives all her attention to the male model, while the male model looks concentrated to the camera, which makes him look careless about the other model.

The shot type is a medium close up to show that the main focus is the model's facial expression. The male model is looking directly into the camera so that means its a direct address, by giving a direct address the male model shows confidence and strength.

This fragrance is aimed at people between 20-30 years old, because the man in the photo is a young model.

The costumes that are used is a suit for the male model, because suits usually connote wealth; symbolising wealth can make people think if they get this fragrance they will be happy and wealthy. On the other hand the female model looks like she is wearing a bikini, because the only thing that is revealed is a bra strap on her shoulder.

The background is a shade of brown, which makes it look like that the models are in a room together. The body language of the male model is strong, connecting the model with the viewers. The font that was used for the words is modern to show that the product that the company is selling is modern.

The light is coming from the left side of the room which makes the models face have a shadow on it.

This advert is focused on the woman in it, to show that this product is for women. The advert shows that the woman doesn't care about the men around her, which makes her look strong. The men around her are naked and they look like they are all interested in her but she is careless about her surrounding which gives a message to the audience that you don't need to look beautiful to impress a man but look beautiful to impress your self. People can refer to the model as hard to get by the way she looks at the camera. The way the model is standing looks like she was walking on the man under her, which shows power and confidence.

The camera is focused on the model's face to show that this product is for woman. The light is coming from the left ( right side of the models) which gives a shadow on the right to make it look more dramatic.

The models costume is a modern dress that would be usually used by wealthy people in special occasion and its colour matches her skin tone and her hair. By wearing the dress shows if you use this fragrance is usually used by wealthy people so by having this fragrance you will be wealthy and can afford to buy dresses like what the middle is wearing. Audiences aspire to look like her/have her lifestyle.

The slogan "FOR THE ADVENTUROUS WOMAN AND THE MAN WHO LOVES HER" gives the reader the feeling that they need to get up and feel the energy and confidence of the model, which can lead the audience to buy the fragrance.

The advert is not realistic because the men were posing for the advert with made it look like it was staged, and they were photoshopped to look like a photo that was ripped and then was reassembled in a weird way, to show that women have power over men.

The main audience are young women aged between 20-30 years because the model looks like she is 25 years old. Secondary audiences could be men that are in the relationship with a woman between the ages 20-30 years.

The angle of the camera was a low angle. The model looks straight into the came with gives a direct address. The type of shot is a long shot which shows the whole body of the female model and how she is standing.
