Assignment 3 - Film Trailer Analysis
The hatred is a horror film that was released on the 12th of September 2017. The trailer has a disruption of normality; it; starts of with characters being happy and excited about their weekend, and then 11 seconds in, the mood of the trailer changes it shows a storm starting which indicates that something is going to go wrong in the movie.
This movie is set in the main characters house, which is a typical setting for a horror film. The characters are in the 21st century this is why they are dressed casually. There are many props used in the trailer like dolls, phone, flashlight; these props all link to the horror film genres conventions because, dolls are always associated with paranormal activities and flashlight makes the view of the characters (and camera) limited. The lighting, in the beginning, was bright which sets the mood to be happy, later in the light was minimal which changed the mood of the trailer and made it more mysterious and freaky. The audience will start to feel uncomfortable and scared due to the effects of the quick cuts and scary scenes. The main characters were two sisters one that is probably in her twenties and the other one looks like a ten-year-old child.
The effects that the editing has made were contributing to making the trailer seem more scarier than it would've been. The beginning of the trailer was edited to be normal. When the normality was broken the editor used one of the most noticeable editing techniques of horror films which were quick cuts creating dramatic tension, which affects the audience and make them feel frightened. Furthermore, the music that was used made the audience feel frightened before the scary scenes were viewed, because of the type of music used which sounded like someone was approaching the characters slowly.
The camera work also contributed towards the trailer, it made it more interesting by not stabilising the camera it makes the audience feel as if they are the camera which makes them feel like they are the ones being haunted. The camera also was used to replace the eyes of the character in the cupboard scene, this gave the audience a chance to having a closer look at the freaky dolls from the perspective of the character.
